NEMA FL-1 Standards


NEMA, produce a set of international standard that LED torches should be rated against.  First released in 2009, these standards are not compulsory for any torch company but are supposed to give the customer a fair way to compare torches.

 

 

Peak Beam Intensity

Sample Size = 3

What it tests:

The maximum luminous intensity of the torch, usually along the centre of the beam.

How we test it:

Beam spot measured at 2m from torch

Run Time

Sample Size = 3

What it tests:

The time the torch can produce light, taken from 30 seconds after turn on until light output reaches 10% of the starting value.

How we test it:

Record time taken to get to 10% of starting brightness, average 3 measurements

 

Beam Distance

Sample Size = 3

What it tests:

The distance from the torch where the light beam reduces to 0.25lux.

 

How we test it:

Beam spot measured at 2m from torch, average 3 sets of results

 

 

 

Light Output

Sample Size = 3

What it tests:

Total luminous flux of the torch, as measured using an integrating sphere.

How we test it:

Measure torch output using integrating sphere, average 3 results

 

 

               


Enclosure Protection

Sample Size = 3

What it tests:

Test for degree of water resistance of torch.

How we test it:

Test samples to a minimum of 100m for 30 minutes.

All torches exceed IPX8 = Immersion beyond 1m

 

Impact Resistance

Sample Size = 3

What it tests:

Resistance to damage when dropped on a solid surface.

How we test it:

Drop from 1m onto solid concrete

Each sample to be dropped 6 times, in different orientations
